Day 4

Breakfast. Transfer to Assy plateau (near Turgen). The plateau is located at heights of 2800-3200 meters. A great view appears when you reach the Assy pass: an incredibly huge green valley with pearls of white yurts and remote flocks of sheep and horses. Since ancient times, it is being used as pasture. Scientists found remains of ancient humans, who lived here more than 5000 years ago.

Once a year in July, the nomads of Almaty region meet at a Nomad's Festival in Assy: it is a great show with traditional Kazakh baiga and kok-par battles, local dishes made of horse milk (kymyz) and meat (kazy). The festival lasts 3 days and this is a definitely good place to explore the authentic Kazakh nomadic culture.

Another attraction of Assy is an Astronomical Observatory - one of the biggest in Kazakhstan, huge dome is seen from any point of the valley. Afternoon drive back to Almaty.
